Electrical Safety Over Winter

Keeping your home safe is our top priority. As winter approaches and we start using more electrical items to stay warm and festive, it’s essential to stay mindful of electrical safety in your home.

Here are some essential electrical safety tips to help you stay safe during the festive season:

  • Heating your home: if you are using electric heaters make sure that you keep them away from curtains and furniture, always unplug them before you go to bed and never use them for drying clothes.
  • Keep your decorations festive and safe: give your lights a check for damaged and broken wires before using them. If you are using a Christmas tree, keep it away from heat sources like radiators or fireplaces.
  • Switch them off before bed: keep your house safe and save money from your bills by turning off all lights and decorations before you go to sleep.
  • Avoid overloading electrical sockets and extension leads: this can lead to overheating and potentially cause fires. Only use one socket extension lead per socket and never plug an extension lead into another extension lead.
  • Staying warm at night: Never use hot water bottles in the same bed as an electric blanket, even if the blanket is switched off. Unplug blankets before you get into bed, unless they have a thermostat control for safe all-night use.
  • Prepare an emergency kit with torches, spare batteries, and fully charged portable chargers in case of a power cut. Using these simple tips can make sure you have a worry-free winter!
